The party noise was a dull hum behind me, but the whispers? Oh, those were clear.
“I went to college with Alpha Floyd and Monica,” someone murmured, just loud enough to sting. “They were the golden couple–fated mates.Back when Alpha Floyd was chasing. Monica, it was a love story that shook the
campus”
“He almost proposed before graduation,” a man added knowingly, his voice wrapped in nostalgia.
“No wonder,She’ll always be the ‘white moonlight‘ in his heart,” a she–wolf giggled behind her champagne flute. “Even without the title, she’s the one who owns his heart.”
“Some she–wolves can claw their way into a pack, birth heirs, play house–but if he doesn’t love you?” A she–wolf glanced my way with a sneer. “You’re just a placeholder. She’s doomed to be forgotten.”
Their words didn’t pierce me like they once would’ve. My heart wasn’t shattering anymore -it was frozen. Numb. Just ice packed around. old wounds.

I took a slow, steadying breath and turned away
from the ballroom.
The moment the doors started closing, a hand darted through the gap.
Monica.
She stepped in with grace.
“The three–day cooling–off period for the divorce ends tomorrow,” she said, tilting her head. “You’ll leave as promised, right?”
I pressed the button for the first floor. “Of
course.”
Monica’s lips curved, “Good. I’m more eager than anyone for you to go.”
She leaned in,“Don’t worry. I’ll take excellent care of your family. Floyd. The pups. The Shadowfang territory. All of it. Soon enough, they won’t even remember your name.”
I didn’t respond. Didn’t even blink.
Suddenly-

The elevator jolted. We both screamed, and we were slammed against the wall. The lights
flickered once… then died.
Darkness swallowed us whole.
I tasted blood in my mouth and felt a warm trickle down my forehead. My wolf stirred, growling softly beneath my skin, but I didn’t
shift.
Monica fumbled with her phone light. “Floyd! Help! The elevator–it’s broken!”
I didn’t bother calling out. He wouldn’t come
for me.
Time passed. Pain blurred it all. My leg throbbed like it was caught in a vice, pinned
beneath twisted metal. Monica groaned,
muttering curses about her ankle.
Then… voices.
Rescue workers.
“Anyone injured?” someone shouted through
the doors.

“Help!” Monica banged frantically. “My leg is
stuck!”
Metal screeched as they pried the doors apart, a sliver of harsh light slicing into the dark. I squinted–saw silhouettes beyond the threshold. Alpha Floyd. Leon. Yolanda. All watching.
A man in a rescue vest turned to Floyd. “Alpha, both women are trapped. Time’s short. The system’s unstable. We can only pull one out
now–who do we save first?”
I held my breath.
Floyd didn’t hesitate. “Save Monica.”
My ears rang.
“Save Aunt Monica!” the pups chorused, tugging on the rescue team’s sleeves. “Please! Hurry!”
One of the rescuers glanced at the wreckage.
“But Luna’s injuries are ”
“I said save Monica.” Floyd’s tone cut through the air like a blade, cold and final.

I couldn’t even speak.
I just watched as Monica was carefully lifted out, cradled like something precious in his
arms.
Then-
Bang.
The elevator groaned and gave way. Metal. slammed down on my legs, and the pain was so violent, so consuming, I nearly shifted on the spot. But I couldn’t. I couldn’t even scream.
My wolf whimpered in agony.
Through the haze of red and the crushing steel, I caught one last glimpse of Floyd walking away, Monica draped against his chest like some tragic heroine, our pups bounding alongside them, cheering.
And then the darkness claimed me for real.
