Madelyn had just opened her mouth to speak when a flurry of hurried footsteps suddenly echoed from the corridor outside.
They belonged to none other than her father, her stepmother, Regina, and her stepsister, Eunice.
“Maddie!” Derek was the first one to step into the ward.
Upon entering, the sight of Madelyn lying in bed with her knee heavily bandaged instantly left him too frantic to utter a single word.
Unable to hold himself back, he immediately launched into a lecture as he stepped forward. “Maddie, were you sick of living? Didn’t you realize how dangerous it was to run off alone to the southern suburbs, a place teeming with evil people? There are all kinds of people there! Why didn’t you consider your safety?”
Seeing her father so anxious, Madelyn bit her lip, feeling incredibly guilty.
“Dad, I’m sorry for having worried you, but I had my reasons for going there,” Madelyn explained softly.
“What reasons?” Regina suddenly interjected. “If you ask me, you must have been restless and merely ran off to have fun!”
Upon hearing that, Madelyn shot her a glare. “How is that any of your business?”
What a blabbermouth! She just has to comment on everything!
Pretentiously, Regina retorted, “Do you think I’d bother with you if it weren’t for your father? Given your ungrateful attitude, I wouldn’t even want to invite trouble upon myself. But do you know how worried your father was about you? He has high blood pressure in the first place. Are you determined to kill him?”
As she spoke, she seemingly choked up.
“Shut up!”
Madelyn was already irritated by her voice. Thus, her pretentious sobbing only served to exacerbate her
annoyance.
She couldn’t help glaring at her. “I’ve said that my matters are none of your business. If there’s nothing else, get out of here.”
Regina hadn’t anticipated her to be so blunt with her and was livid to the point of almost bursting a blood vessel.
Immediately, she turned around and complained to Derek, “Derek, look at your precious daughter. Was I wrong to say that? Isn’t it common knowledge that she has always liked associating with people of questionable character? And now, she went off to such a place all by herself. What was I supposed to think?”

Seeing that the two of them planned to continue arguing, Sebastian frowned deeply, feeling a headache coming on.
He couldn’t help barking, “That’s enough. Stop arguing.”
The ward abruptly fell silent, with all eyes turning to him.
Sebastian started impassively, “Dad, Mrs. Thornton, I know your visit today is out of concern for Madelyn. She’s at fault in the matter this time, having worried you. Of course, it’s also my negligence. I failed to take care of her properly. I assure you I will be more careful next time. Such an incident will never happen again.”
Those words were spoken with such calmness and sincerity that everyone was taken aback for a moment.
He paused briefly. Then, he continued, “However, Madelyn is currently unwell and needs rest. So, it would be best if you all return home for now. I’ll take care of things here.”
Upon hearing that, Derek and Regina exchanged a glance.
Since Sebastian had said as much, they couldn’t linger any longer.
Before leaving, Derek said earnestly by his daughter’s bedside, “Maddie, I wasn’t blaming you. I was just too worried about you that I was so agitated earlier. Just focus on getting better at the hospital, okay?”
Madelyn naturally understood her father concern. She nodded emphatically.
Then, Derek and Regina had no choice but to leave. Finally, the spacious ward reverted to its initial tranquility.
In the ward, only Madelyn and Sebastian remained.
Sebastian’s expression remained grim, leaving Madelyn with no choice but to bite her lip and tug at his clothes gently. “Sebastian, could you please let me explain?”

“No…” As Madelyn listened to those words, her heart broke, and tears escaped her eyes.

After saying that harshly, Sebastian suddenly chuckled self–derisively. “Never mind. Since you desire freedom so much, I will grant it to you as soon as possible.”
Having said that, he strode out of the ward without a backward glance.
