Generally speaking, doctors would typically keep the condition of their patients‘ bodies confidential.
Hence, the warden had no choice but to obscure the truth, stating that Malcolm was Janessa’s relative. That way, the doctor would naturally disclose the information.
Sure enough, upon hearing that Malcolm was a relative of the deceased, the doctor immediately nodded. Then, he stated, “The cause of the deceased’s death was a sudden cardiac arrest.”
“Is it really that simple?” Upon hearing that, Malcolm was somewhat puzzled. “Did you check if she had any pre–existing conditions, how the illness was triggered, or if it was due to improper diet?”
“I think so!” the prison warden suddenly exclaimed in response. “I recall the day the female prisoner died, she seemed to have eaten a bit of stale bread.”
Malcolm immediately furrowed his brow. “Take me to see it.”
“Follow me,” the prison warden swiftly led Malcolm and the doctor to assess the situation.
Following that, the group arrived at the prison cell where Janessa was being held captive.
The scene hadn’t been cleaned up yet, with plenty of leftover bread still scattered on the ground. It was clear that it was the bread Janessa had eaten that day.
Upon seeing it, Malcolm immediately asked the doctor to step forward. “Could you please examine this bread?”
“Will do.” The doctor stepped forward and picked up the bread from the ground, ripping a small chunk from it.
First, he held it under his nose for a sniff, then popped it into his mouth to taste. Finally, he turned to the two of them and casually remarked, “This bread is made from starch and butter. Though it tastes a bit unpleasant, it doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients.”
“There was absolutely nothing wrong with that bread. I even saw Ava sneak a piece the other day, and she’s perfectly fine.” At that moment, a prison officer walked over and spoke.
The “Ava” she was referring to was the very same prison officer who had stolen Janessa’s bread that day and had even given the latter a severe beating. However, that prison officer had since been dismissed.
Upon hearing those words, the prison warden nodded. “Mr. Schultz, I believe there should be no issue with
this bread.”
The doctor also stated, “There’s definitely nothing wrong with the bread, so I suspect that this female prisoner’s abrupt death was caused by her depression and despair from being incarcerated. She couldn’t eat or sleep well, which likely led to her sudden demise.”
“Are you sure?” Malcolm still found the situation exceedingly peculiar, but no matter how he looked at it, he couldn’t find anything suspicious.

Unfazed, the doctor returned to the morgue, then gently covered Janessa with the white sheet. After that, he prepared to hand her body over to her family.

At that moment, Sebastian looked at Madelyn. Seeing her brows still tightly knitted, he knew she was still unsettled by the matter at hand.
Hence, he reached out and pulled her into his embrace, gently comforting her. “It’s okay. Now that Janessa is gone, it’s actually beneficial for you. Otherwise, she would have continued to hurt you.”
“She’s still a person.” Madelyn couldn’t help but feel uneasy. She was so overwhelmed as she spoke that she was on the brink of tears.
Even though she had been ruthlessly killed by Janessa in her previous life and was not willing to let Janessa off easily, she still couldn’t believe Janessa was dead just like that.
For reasons unknown, there was still a knot lodged in a particularly awkward spot in her heart. No matter what she thought, it just didn’t sit right with her.
She had initially thought that after five years, once Janessa was released from prison, they would surely continue their rivalry.

“You jest,” the doctor said with a subtle smile. “How could I possibly be of any help? I’m merely a physician of modest skill, unable to determine the cause of Ms. Sherritt’s death.” It was clear he was distancing himself from the matter, pretending to know nothing.
Rachel was greatly satisfied with his response. “I knew I didn’t misjudge you. Don’t worry. Once this matter is completely settled, the reward I promised you will be transferred in full to your account. Just sit back and look forward to the good life ahead.”
