Chapter 3
Cynthia thought he’d finally come to his senses, so she answered the call.
Zaiden’s voice was urgent. Get to the hospital. Now.”
She had no idea what was going on but jumped in her car and drove over as fast as she could.
The moment she arrived, Zaiden dragged her aside and tore into her.
“What took you so long? Were you driving like a damn turtle?”
Before she could figure out what was happening, Zaiden shoved her straight out the door.
Outside, camera flashes exploded like fireworks. Cynthia instinctively raised her hand to shield her face.
A crowd of reporters shoved microphones at her.
Ms. Gwinnett, it is said that you tried to trap Mr. Gwinnett by getting pregnant, but he saw through it and now you’re here for an abortion. Are you heading home now?”
“Ms. Gwinnett, is it true that you stole Mr. Gwinnett from Belinda and have been sabotaging their relationship all these years?
“Ms. Gwinnett, rumor has it that Mr. Gwinnett left the wedding because he caught you cheating with another man, with whom you even had a baby. Care to comment?
Cynthia’s face went paper white. Even if she was slow to catch on, she knew exactly what was happening now.
She muttered “No comment and tried to walk away, only to see her car windows smashed, vandalized beyond recognition. Her
fury boiled over.
Zaiden’s assistant rushed over to help, clearly shaken. Cynthia didn’t take it out on him. The poor guy didn’t deserve it.
In the parking garage, Zaiden pulled up in his Koenigsegg, stopping right in front of her.
Belinda leaned over from the passenger seat, her voice soft and apologetic. “Cynthia, don’t blame Zaiden. This is my fault. I don’t know who leaked the news about my miscarriage.”
Tm a celebrity. This kind of scandal could ruin me. But still, thank you for stepping up for me when I needed it.”
Zaiden looked worried.“Close the window, Belinda. Don’t catch a cold. You are weak now.”
“But I have to say something to Cynthia!”
Just before the window rolled up, Zaiden turned to Cynthia and said, “Wait here. I’ll come back for you.”
Come back for her?
Cynthia had never heard anything so ridiculous.
From the moment he didn’t let her in the car, she knew that he wasn’t coming back.
A torrential downpour began to fall.
Cynthia walked off, laughing bitterly at how much she’d given him over the years and how stupid she’d been.
She couldn’t understand it. She’d stood by him when his company was on the brink. Saved his life when he nearly died. She’d
shown up every time he needed her. Had none of that moved him, even a little?
Ten years. A full decade. All gone, like bubbles bursting into the air.
When she woke up, two days had passed.
Opening her eyes, she saw Braiden.
Chapter 3
Looking around, she realized she was in his home. She bolted upright, too fast. Her head swam.
Braiden walked over with some water.“I saved your life, but that doesn’t mean you get to die in my house. Take it slow.”
That blunt way of speaking, typical Braiden. Cynthia was used to it.
She took the glass and sipped. The water soothed her.
“Being rescued by my nemesis is a tough pill to swallow.”
Braiden suddenly leaned in close, his gaze sharp and intense, his eyes stealing her breath away.
They’d dealt with each other many times before, but never this close
People always said Braiden looked like a beautiful monster. Honestly? They weren’t wrong.
‘Don’t swallow it, then. But if I hadn’t stepped in, would you accuse me of standing by and doing nothing?”
Cynthia instinctively avoided his eyes and looked away.
‘Mr. Ferguson, I’m grateful you saved me. I won’t forget it.”
He straightened, lips curling into a mischievous smirk. So, how do you plan to thank me?”
Cynthia’s eyes sparkled with mischief “How about I take you out for a meal? My treat.”
Braiden chuckled.“Ms. Cynthia, you never cease to amaze me. Still sick, and you’re already trying to talk business? Nice try. I’m
not biting.”
He turned and walked out.
Cynthia let out a sigh..
Moments later, the door opened again. She thought he’d changed his mind only to see him holding her phone.
“You’re awake, so here. Your phone. Zaiden’s called you hundreds of times these past two days. I didn’t pick up any of them.”
Cynthia took the phone without looking at it, silently scolding herself for being too impatient.
Braiden was notoriously hard to get a hold of. She’d invited him to her wedding, but he hadn’t shown.
She remembered what she’d said when she saw Braiden, “We may be rivals at work, but that’s all it is. I’m getting married, come
to the wedding, will you?”
Usually, Braiden would’ve shut her down with a snide remark. But not that day.
He just asked, “Are you sure about this? You really want to marry Zaiden?”
I
She hadn’t thought much of it at the time. She smiled and said, ‘Absolutely. Come to my wedding. And don’t worry, I know you’re a cheapskate. No need to bring a gift.”
All he said was, “I won’t attend. But since it’s your choice, I wish you the best.”
She’d thought that was odd but hadn’t pressed.
Soon after, a maid came in.
“Ms. Cynthia, I’ve never seen Mr. Ferguson care about a woman like this before.”
“Ever since he came back from abroad, he’s been by your side for two days and nights. He didn’t even close his eyes.”
“He wouldn’t even let us help. Did everything himself to take care of you.”
Cynthia smiled at her politely. Braiden had made it clear that he’d only helped because he didn’t want anyone to die in his house.
<Chapter 3
They were rivals in work, nothing more. Not friends. But he never meant her harm, either.
She picked up her phone and checked it. Over three hundred missed calls.
It was the first time in all her years with Zaiden that he’d called her this many times.
There were messages too. “Where are you? Didn’t I tell you to wait for me? Are you mad at me? Cynthia, enough of this perulance.”
She gave a cold, bitter smile..
In Zaiden’s world, she had never been the one be cherished.
After running a fever for two days, she finally recovered. As soon as she returned home, she saw Zaiden waiting for her on the
sofa.
