Chapter 5
Seeing the number I once knew by heart, I shut off my phone, pulled out the SIM card, and snapped it in two, cutting off my last tie to Dallas.
Meanwhile, Finn, consumed by fury, smashed his phone against the wall.§
“Faith, well done. You bribed the media, spreading lies about your miscarriage, just to grab my attention. Now you’re playing the pity card?”
He spun around and caught Darcie’s tear–filled eyes.§
“Is it my fault?” she whispered, voice trembling.
“Did I ruin your relationship with Faith? Maybe I should leave. Maybe I was wrong to interfere. Even this child, maybe it’s fate. It’s his bad luck to have a useless mother like me.”
Finn hurriedly pulled her into his arms, his voice soft and reassuring.
“Darcie, this has nothing to do with you. It’s Faith who’s too scheming and refuses to accept the breakup. She’s just stirring up trouble with
all this.”
“I’ve already booked an appointment with a renowned nephrologist. I’ll take you to Miami tomorrow. Maybe there’s still hope for your condition.”
Darcie’s face stiffened.
“Go to Miami?“}
Finn didn’t notice her hesitation.}
“Yes. Your body isn’t stable enough to carry a pregnancy. I need a doctor nearby to ease my mind.“}
“I’ve already bought the plane tickets. We leave tomorrow.”
Darcie forced a smile.
“Alright, whatever you say.”
As for me, the moment I landed, I was about to find a quiet spot to make a call, but suddenly, I fell into a warm embrace.}
A faint scent of grass and wood drifted gently to my nose.
“Marry me, my future wife.”
Before I could even turn around, the big screen above flashed the news about my miscarriage and retirement.} Archie’s eyes landed on it, too.
I dared not meet his gaze and said coldly, “You can still change your mind. Everything they’re saying is true.”
I pulled up my suitcase and started to walk away.
But Archie grabbed my hand with a painful grip, his voice trembling, “Faith, you’re trying to run away again! Seven years ago, I let you go once. This time, I won’t let you leave me.”
“So what if it’s all true? I don’t care!”
“We already have the household registration book. Do you dare marry me?“}
I had endured all the humiliation with Finn without shedding a tear.
But at that moment, Archie’s words shattered and I cried uncontrollably.
“Don’t cry. Everyone’s waiting for us at the marriage office.”
“I missed the most important seven years of your life. I let you suffer so much. This was my fault. From now on, as long as I’m here, no one will ever hurt you again.”
Archie drove me to the marriage registration office.
After we received our marriage certificate, we drove home together in silence.
My father didn’t say a word the entire way.
So when we finally arrived at the door, I was the first to speak, saying, “I’m sorry.”
Lbraced myself for a harsh scolding from my parents.
But to my surprise, my mother’s tears fell even harder than mine.
