Stella was in a funk the whole way home after school, and her mood didn’t lift even after she got back.
Samuel happened to be home today. He’d been looking after Jonas these past few days, and had just managed to slip away for a quick shower. He’d barely finished changing when Stella and Raymond walked in. Noticing Stella’s gloomy face. Samuel asked. “Stella, what’s wrong?”
The moment Stella saw Samuel, everything that happened at school came flooding back. Her face darkened, and the resentment she’d been bottling up only grew stronger.
She glared and snapped at Samuel “It’s all your fault! If you weren’t so useless, why would I be a laughingstock at school?” In that moment, forgot all her usual fear of him and let all her anger out on Samuel.
As soon as Stella said that, both Samuel and Raymond froze, staring at her in shock.
It took Samuel a few seconds to process. He was stunned, then his face turned cold as ice. “Stella, did you leave all your manners at the door?”
Samuel looked at Stella, almost in disbelief. She’d always been sweet and sensible, always quick with a kind word. He could hardly believe those harsh words had come from her.
“Stella, that was way out of line. Apologize, now,” Raymond said. frowning in displeasure. The image of Stella’s twisted expression just now made her seem like a stranger–nothing like the kind, understanding girl he remembered.
Realizing she’d said something she shouldn’t have, Stella panicked. Meeting Samuel and Raymond’s accusing stares, she lowered her head and quickly apologized, “Dad, Raymond, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that” As she spoke, her eyes turned red.
“It’s fine. I know you only said that because you’re upset today. I’m not mad at you” Raymond said, instantly softening when he saw her teary eyes.
Samuel looked at Stella’s red–rimmed, pitiful eyes, but felt nothing. Maybe the old Samuel would have felt sorry for her, but after everything that happened–the company’s collapse, seeing people’s true colors–he just felt numb.
And with Jonas sick in the hospital, Samuel was the only one taking care of him. He was exhausted, body and soul. Times like these made him see things he’d never noticed before.
Words said in anger might be impulsive, but they’re often the truest reflection of what was in someone’s heart. Stella really did blame him just now.
He’d poured his heart into Stella since she was little, always giving her the best. Now that the family had fallen, she resented him for being powerless. Of course it hurt.
All Samuel felt was tiredness. Without another word, he turned and walked back to his room alone.
