“Lily, Eva didn’t mean to. Nothing happened between us. You have to believe me. Otherwise, why wouldn’t you have felt the pain that comes from betrayal of the mate bond?”
Seeing that I didn’t respond for a long while, Liam added again.
“Wolves are the most loyal of all. And I’m an Alpha. If I had betrayed my mate, the mate bond would have told you something, wouldn’t it?”
I let out a cold laugh. Yes, it used to be that I felt nothing because he had numbed me with that so-called prenatal medication. But in this moment, the bond’s pain was sharper than ever.
“Lily! I know I’ve been neglecting you lately. Once Eva and I finish attending to these matters, I’ll take you out for dinner tonight. I even brought you and the baby a gift just to make up for the past few days.”
He spoke so vividly. If it had been before, I would have nodded excitedly and waited for Liam to come home. But even hearing his voice made me sick.
“Alright, Lily. You and the baby wait for me. I bought lots of little clothes for him. Eva helped me pick them out. We really should thank her properly later. I’ll stop here. I have some matters to handle.”
When he mentioned the baby, my nose stung with grief, and my wolf howled in rage. I took a deep breath, hung up the phone, and tossed my Luna badge onto the council table.
“You all heard it. I’m done. Go ask your precious Eva if she can be Luna instead. I won’t serve in this position any longer.”
I turned and walked out, leaving the Elders staring at one another in silence. It was only after stepping outside the council room that I felt like I could breathe again.
I placed the miscarriage report on the dining table. Then, I picked up my suitcase and walked to the door.
The person my father had sent was already waiting right on time. I would never see Liam again.
