Chapter 5
Cedric pointed toward the yard.
“My mom is over there.”
I knew I couldn’t keep hiding.
Raymond and Evelyn only had a brief encounter with me before, so they probably wouldn’t remember someone like me.
As for Liora, as long as I firmly denied everything, there was no way she could embarrass me in front of so many witnesses.
I took a few steps forward and gave a slight nod to everyone gathered.
“Welcome to Haven House.”
All eyes turned to me.
Raymond examined me with a complicated expression, full of hidden meaning.
Liora was shocked and visibly unsettled, her mouth agape.
Hearing me, a supposed mute, actually speak left her dumbfounded.
Cedric called out, “Mom!” and threw his little arms around me.
The director introduced me to the Merrick family. “This is Ms. Sullivan, also one of our staff here at the home.”
Yvonne ran over, too, tugging shyly on my shirt hem and hiding behind

“Are they twins? Such lovely children.”
She asked Yvonne’s name, and Yvonne obediently answered.
I politely invited, “Would you all like to come inside for some tea?”
Regina eagerly agreed, “Yes, that would be lovely. Please excuse us.

guests.
Regina gently patted the kids on the head.
“Yvonne and Cedric, you’re such good kids.”
Liora sneered sarcastically, “I wonder what Ms. Sullivan’s full name is? That surname is quite rare. My father once got tangled up with a vixen who was also surnamed Sullivan.”
I stayed calm, deflecting her jab. “Yes, quite a coincidence.”
Liora tried to probe further, but Evelyn shot her a glare, and she quietly stepped back.
Regina warmly said, “Ms. Sullivan, if you have any difficulties, just let me know. My grandson has set up a charitable fund. You can talk to the director about applying. The process is simple, and you can get financial aid.”
I lowered my gaze politely, “Thank you. The director has always been very kind to us. I’m doing some side work now, so I can manage our needs. I believe aid should go to children who need it more.”
Raymond, who had been silent until then, suddenly cut in. “Ms. Sullivan,

you’re raising your children alone. Doesn’t their father take any responsibility?”
I was taken aback. Liora and Evelyn looked surprised that Raymond would ask such a question.
Seeing his serious gaze, I had no choice but to answer, “I broke up with the kids‘ father.”
“If you’ve broken up, you should still bear your legal responsibilities. Ms. Sullivan, do you need legal assistance?” Raymond said matter–of–factly. d matter–of–factly.
I pursed my lips awkwardly, not responding. Regina laughed lightly to ease the tension. “Enough, enough. Once it’s over, it’s over.”
I nodded in agreement. Regina reached out to grab my wrist but accidentally touched the bracelet on my left hand.
Curious, she looked down and pulled up my sleeve, revealing the crystal bracelet to everyone’s eyes.
I shivered with a chill running down my spine.
Evelyn peeked at it and exclaimed in surprise, “That bracelet, why does it look so much like the family heirloom we have?”
