Shaking, I fumbled for my phone, trying to call Charles.
Then a car, headlights blazing, came barreling toward me.
My back went cold. In an instant, I knew–it wasn’t an accident. This car was aiming for me.
I tried to run, but fear had already stripped the strength from my limbs. My knees gave out. I collapsed to the ground.
The wheels were nearly on top of me when another car slammed into it from the side.
The impact sent the vehicle spinning, flipping once before coming to a stop.
I looked toward the car that had saved me.
Callum was in the driver’s seat, eyes wide with terror. Blood gushed from a gash on his forehead.
Caryn, in the passenger seat, had already passed out cold.
Trembling, I dialed for an ambulance. Then I forced myself to call the police.
And then everything went black.
In my dream, I saw Sean again, on that fated rainy night.

The way he crashed into the guardrail, his head bleeding, me trying to wipe the blood away, my hands shaking. No matter
how I tried, it wouldn’t stop.
In the end, he had clutched my hand through tears, asked me to look after his brother, and told me to live my life well.
I woke sobbing, blindly reaching out, latching onto the hand next to mine like a lifeline.
Callum
He looked so much like Sean. A white bandage wrapped around his forehead.
For a second, I couldn’t separate the two. The tears wouldn’t stop. “You’re alive? You didn’t die?”

He sat on the edge of the bed, pulling me into his arms. His voice was thick with relief. “Diana, I’m okay. Don’t be scared. It’s all right now.”
I felt him press a gentle kiss to the top of my head.
And just like that, reality slammed back into me.
I shoved him away, my voice sharp. “Callum? What are you doing here?”
He could tell I’d mistaken him for someone else, but still, he held on tightly, refusing to let go.
“Diana, it’s a good thing I got there in time. I don’t even want to think about what could’ve happened if I hadn’t. I was so
scared I’d lose you.”
There was a time I would’ve melted in that warmth, let myself stay in his arms a little longer.
But not anymore.
I pushed him away with resolve. My tone was cold. “Callum, don’t hold me. Don’t forget–you have a girlfriend. Caryn was in
that car with you, Is she okay?”
At the mention of her name, his expression turned stormy. “Don’t talk about her.”
I frowned slightly.
I thought I understood Callum.
If he said he liked Caryn, then he really must’ve liked her.
But now, the way he flinched at her name like it left a bad taste in his mouth–what was that supposed to mean?
