Chapter 6 Escaping Control
“Don’t let her leave the residence without my permission,” Eric commanded the staff at the Daglesh’s residence.
“Unlawful imprisonment! Eric, you might seem respectable, but who would have guessed you’re just trash beneath the surface!”
Despite my insults, Eric remained indifferent.
I truly regretted getting involved with Eric. Now I just wanted off this sinking ship, but I was stuck.
“Eric, is this how you treat Karen?”
Eric went still.
From what I understood, Eric and Karen were childhood sweethearts, and their families were considering a marriage alliance.
It wouldn’t be long before the Daglesh family would reach out to the Harlan family to propose the marriage.
“Karen has returned, but you’re still holding on to me. Could it be that you’ve actually developed feelings for me, a stand–in?”
I threw out that last comment nonchalantly, aiming to irritate Eric.
Unexpectedly, Eric frowned, like he was seriously considering the question.
My heart raced with sudden concern.
From the beginning, I only saw him as a source of financial support, never considering him in any other way.
To me, money held greater value than men.
After all, men could betray you, but money would not.
“Amanda, I’m sorry you’ll have to endure staying at the residence for a few days.
“Once everything’s sorted, I’ll come back for you.”
“Eric!”
Eric paid me no heed and walked away.
Days went by without any sight of Eric.
However, the Daglesh family’s servants were bustling with activity.
“Mr. Daglesh is set to get engaged to Ms. Harlan. We need to ensure the residence is in perfect order, don’t we?” the

butler remarked to me with a grin.
“Now that they’re getting engaged, can I be released?”
The butler was in a dilemma. “I cannot let you leave without Mr. Daglesh’s instructions.”
Once I returned to my room, a shiver ran down my spine.
The window was fully open, allowing a rush of cold air to fill the space.
“Sweetheart.”
A pair of strong arms encircled my waist, and the door softly clicked shut.
A familiar scent wafted to my nose.
With a shaky voice, I asked, “Samuel?”
“It’s me.
“That scoundrel Eric really had you here all along. I checked several of his places but couldn’t track you down.
“Luckily, I didn’t stop looking.”

He pulled me closer, my back snug against his chest, where I felt the unwavering beat of his heart through the fabric.
“Sweetheart, let me get you out of here, alright?”
“Alright, but… I want freedom.”
I turned to face him and was taken aback by Samuel’s appearance.
He seemed thinner, and the intense, threatening energy he exuded had intensified.
A fresh scar marked the corner of his eye.
“Freedom?”
Samuel asked, looking puzzled. “Aren’t you content just being with me?”
“I’ll always keep you safe, sweetheart. We can return to our old ways–you remain at home, and I’ll handle the work to provide for us.”
I shook my head.
“Samuel, you realize I was lying to you as well.
“The truth is, I spent every day with Eric, even on your birthday.”
Samuel’s fingers tightened, and he said through gritted teeth, “It doesn’t matter because I lied to you too.
“Can we consider it even? Let’s forget it all, and then…”

“Samuel!” I interrupted him. “What I’m trying to say is, I never truly cared about you. If you hadn’t showered me with expensive jewelry and accessories, do you really think I would’ve left the door open for you every night, let you sneak into my bed, and dealt with your awful temper?”
“Amanda!”
Samuel pinched my chin.
As he leaned closer, I could see the raging anger swirling in his eyes.
“I’m already trying to make amends. Can’t you just pretend a bit longer?
“It looks like you never actually read that letter.
“If you had, you wouldn’t be saying these things to me.”
Unfortunately, I had already shredded the letter into pieces.
From the look on Samuel’s face, it was clear he had no plans to mention the letter’s contents again.
Samuel and I were at an impasse.
Eventually, Samuel gave in.
“I’ll help you escape from the Daglesh’s residence.
“Eric has been handling matters with his parents and the Harlan family recently.
“He intends to break off his engagement to Karen and marry you instead.”
My eyes widened in disbelief.
“Marry me? Is Eric out of his mind?”
“Possibly.”
Samuel ruffled my hair.
“Take care, sweetheart. I’ll be back.”
He didn’t linger any longer. He jumped out the window and disappeared.
Samuel and I had agreed to flee from the Daglesh’s residence on the day of Eric and Karen’s engagement party.
