The day I was officially cured, Vincenzo proposed to me.
After wasting eight years on Hugh, I no longer had the courage to trust men easily.
However, the Mancini family was too powerful and wealthy, and I honestly could not find a reason to say no.
Right after we left the City Hall, Vincenzo took me straight to Africa.
He had made all the arrangements, and this trip was for me.
He knew everything I liked. It was as if he had known me forever.
I was enjoying the vacation in peace until I unexpectedly ran into Hugh, the man I had not seen in ages.
The man in front of me looked completely worn out. He was disheveled, hollow–eyed, and just a shadow of his former self.
“Eleanor, you’re alive!”
He rushed forward, grabbed my hand, and anxiously pushed up my sleeve.
“Your wounds are healed. You’re okay now!”
He was so overwhelmed he pulled me into a hug, his voice choked with emotion.

I shoved him away, annoyed.
“Sir, I think you’ve got the wrong person.”
I wrapped my arm around Vincenzo, steadying his breath.
“This is my husband whom I love very much.
“Whatever history we had–it ended long ago.

“You and Gwendolyn had your wedding, and that was the day I knew- we were done for good.”
Hugh froze for a second, then blurted out in disbelief, “He’s… he’s that vegetable from the Mancini family, isn’t he? How is he even standing?”
Then he turned back to me. “This is all Gwendolyn’s fault. She didn’t tell me your condition had worsened, so that was why I asked her to stand in at the wedding!”
“I’d had known you were seriously ill, I would’ve absolutely…”
“That’s enough.”
Vincenzo finally stepped in, unable to hold back.
“Did you keep Eleanor around for eight years to cure her illness, or was it all for the woman you could never let go of?
“Did you think karma wouldn’t catch up to you?
“The truth always comes out eventually, and you’ll pay for what you did.”
With that, Vincenzo wrapped his arm around me and walked off, leaving Hugh frozen in place.

Then Hugh came looking for me again, eyes red. “Eleanor, you’ve already taken your revenge. I’ve lost everything. Can’t you forgive me?”
However, I only smiled and handed him a few documents.
