Everyone screamed in terror as Zoe’s bullet shot straight toward Shawn’s forehead.
At the last second, Shawn tilted his head slightly to the left. His short hair barely moved as the bullet narrowly missed him, grazing his right ear by a hair’s breadth before slamming into the wall behind him. That had been way too close.
Shawn looked up, his sharp eyes searching the crowd until they locked onto Zoe. It was as if he could see right through her
Raising an eyebrow, he said in a calm, deep voice, “Got a problem with me?”
Zoe’s expression stayed blank. The assassination had failed, but she wasn’t disappointed. In her ten years as a mercenary, Shawn was the only opponent she truly respected. If he had been easy to kill, it wouldn’t have meant anything.
Their eyes met, and Zoe’s mind worked quickly. She needed to find a way to cover her tracks now that the attempt had failed.
Zoe’s face instantly shifted from calm to pure panic. Her eyes widened, and she seemed like a scared high school girl who had just made a huge mistake. “Sorry! I missed the shot!” she shouted, her voice shaking “Mr. Ludwig, are you okay?”
Shawn raised an eyebrow. She looked genuinely panicked, but he thought he caught a hint of regret in her voice.
And earlier, he’d sensed something dangerous about her–something that reminded him of a fight he’d had a few days ago in the Jelonsburg underground market with a woman,
But he refused to believe the woman from the fight could be Zoe. And the idea of Zoe being Firefox was even more ridiculous–Firefox would never display that kind of weakness.
“Zoe!” Cheryl pushed through the crowd, her face pale. “You almost killed someone, Do you realize that?” she yelled, “Look at your aim. If Mr. Ludwig hadn’t moved fast, he could’ve died. You’re hopeless!”
Others started jumping in, and the criticism just kept coming.
“If you can’t shoot, stay away fr
from guns. Thankfully, Mr. Ludwig was quick. Who knows what would’ve happened otherwise?”
“Zoe, get off the range. You shouldn’t be allowed near a gun again.”
The crowd was convinced Zoe missed because she was a terrible shot.
Eunice felt a surge of satisfaction. She’d always doubted Zoe’s abilities, and now it was clear–when it came to the real skill like shooting. Zoe was completely outmatched.
But Eumor knew she had to play her part. She put on a worried expression and rushed over. “Zoe, you can’t keep doing this, she said. grabbing Zoe’s arm. “Give me the gun. Let’s just stop here, okay?”
Jacob looked furious, his eyes burning with rage. Herbert, on the other hand, stayed quiet.
Heiben had always been the most doubtful about Zoe’s abilities, but now he was starting to question his own judgment. Ever since that failed shoot, his eyes had stayed lucked on her.
