Chapter 3
“Not even close.”
A single slap was far from enough to quell her rage.
Bergen took the hand she’d struck him with and brought it to his lips, pressing a kiss to it.
“Did that hurt you? “Ill get you ice when we’re home. Then I’ll give you a proper explanation. Don’t waste your energy on someone nothing to us.”

Vanessie lowered her eyelids, a touch of sadness flashing in her eyes.
That was probably just men’s nature. They’d never admit their wrongdoing unless they get caught red–handed.
“Means nothing!”
“Are you referring to Ms. Campbell?”
She tilted her head to observe Kelly, who stood frozen with a pale, lifeless face, all her earlier provocative spirit evaporated.
Yeah.”
Bergen’s answer came without hesitation, firm and absolute.
Kelly’s already pale face drained further of color.
Walking out of the bridal shop, Vanessie headed toward her car,
Bergen seized her wrist, pulling her forcefully to his vehicle instead.
“You’re riding with me.”
Vanessie struggled briefly, but his grip was ironclad Forced to relent, she let him lead her to his car.
-Bergen opened the passenger door, and there was a pink and white hair clip lying quietly on the gray–black interior seat.
He reached in casually and removed it, his expression unperturbed.
Vanessie sneered.
“Should you check if there are any other personal items? I don’t want to accidentally stumble on stuff like underwear and

His voice turned stern. “I love you, but I won’t indulge baseless accusations. I won’t tolerate what occurred today from repeating. Venberg Group is at a critical juncture. I can’t avoid working with female partners.
“Today, I humored you because Kelly is insignificant. But if you embarrass an important client with these suspicions, how do you expect our company to grow?”
Vanessie looked at him calmly, her clear and beautiful eyes
cold.
Only now did Vanessie realize Bergen had been a really masterful pick–up artist
Without another word of argument, without stepping into his car, she turned and walked back to her own vehicle. The engine roared to life as she drove away.
Outside the bridal shop, pedestrians streamed past, Bergen made no move to stop her, his face dark as he opened his car door. Just as he was about to get in, he spotted Kelly–emerging from the shop, her face pale.
After a beat of hesitation, he gestured curtly. “Get in.”
Meanwhile, Vanessie stared helplessly at the severely dented rear bumper of the luxury car before her, its license plate a conspicuous string of

Stepping out of her car, she approached the driver to apologize, “I’m so sorry, L…”
The driver glanced at her but remained silent, instead moving to open the rear door with practiced deference.
As the car door opened, a handsome figure stepped out of the car. The man’s shirt was buttoned meticulously to the top, his sharply defined features set in an expression of aloof indifference.
Recognition flashed through Vanessie. She knew who he was.
But before she could speak, he had already stridden past her. Leaning against the roadside railing, he raised his phone to his ear. The wind tousled his hair, briefly revealing his broad forehead.
“Madam, please contact me when your car is repaired. I’ll arrange for you to pick it up.”
The driver handed Vanessie a business card.
She stole a glance toward the man still on his phone. The call seemed to be going poorly. His brow furrowed slightly as he absentmindedly stroked a bird resting on the railing.
Ten minutes later, a black van arrived. The man boarded efficiently while his driver remained to handle the accident details. Before leaving, his gaze swept in Vanessie’s direction, making her quickly look away in guilt
By the time all the paperwork was processed and she returned home, it was already late at night.
During this time, Bergen had sent her another message, but Vanessie didn’t reply.

Exhausted, she washed up and fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Vanessie scheduled viewings for potential homebuyers through the real estate platform. As she prepared, she began sorting through her belongings, discarding piles of items.
Most were trinkers Bergen had given her during their university days
These once–treasured objects now revealed their true nature, cheap and tawdry, much like the man who had gifted them.
Three days later, Bergen returned to find Vanessie tending to newly bloomed roses in the garden.
He approached from behind, wrapping his arms around her waist and nuzzling against her.
“Did you miss me, darling?
Vanessie scoffed, “With a beauty by your side, why would you need my longing? You’d prefer I forget you entirely, so as not to disturb your little
rendezvous?
Her voice was icy as she seized his moment of distraction to wrench free from his embrace.
The faint trace of women’s perfume clinging to him made her stomach turn.
But Bergen reacted swiftly, his hands snapping back to her waist, pulling her into his arms again.
Even through his shirt, the heat of his toned muscles was unbearable.
Vanessie struggled, only to be crushed tighter in his unyielding grip
“You’re the only one I love, he murmured, bending to whisper in her ear, his voice deliberately low, disarming “Enough of this, okay?”
Vanessie’s fingers clenched around a rose stem. Thorns pierced deep, drawing blood, but the physical pain did nothing to dull the revulsion. churning inside her.
She dropped her hand, roses scattering all over the ground
Bergen–noticed immediately, lifting her injured finger with a frown.
Without hesitation, he bent to suck the blood from her wound.
When Vanessie’s fingertip touched his warm lips, her expression suddenly changed.
How could he still pretend at devotion without flinching after three days with Kelly?
How many times had those lips kissed Kelly?
