“And she’s so well–behaved. There’s no way she lied!”
The nanny’s gut–wrenching sobs echoed in his ears again.
He tuned it out, letting one phrase repeat in his head, “Well–behaved?”
Was Brietta
ell–behaved?
Kind of. At home, she always called his name in that soft, sweet voice.
She did whatever he said. She never defied him.
She’d always been like that.
Thinking about it, he couldn’t help but smile faintly.
But then, Nadya’s face popped into his mind.
No. No way. She wasn’t well–behaved.
She only acted that way in front of him. At school, she bullied Nadya.
Brietta bullied her so much that Nadya cried every day, and every time Nadya saw him, she’d tearfully complain about what Brietta did to her.
Over time, he came to believe Brietta was a manipulator. Nadya lost her parents and was only staying at their house. She had never taken Brietta’s parents or him away from her.
She was just trying to survive, but Brietta never gave her a break.
Even during the SATs, Brietta knew that Nadya didn’t score well, yet she laughed out loud when she received her own high score. If that wasn’t

But come to think of it, aside from that moment of laughter, he never actually saw Brietta bully Nadya with his own eyes.
All the stories came from his buddies or Nadya herself.
The more he thought about it, the more his head ached. He was starting to doubt whether Brietta ever bullied Nadya at all. After all, he never saw it happen.
He called his buddy, asking him to investigate the truth.
Then he walked up to the basement door and knocked coldly.
“Brietta, come out! Don’t think a nanny putting on a show can fool me.
“I know you’re in there. If you come out and admit your mistake now, I can still forgive you.”
He stopped knocking and waited.
Ten seconds. Thirty. Fifty. Two minutes. No response.
Ken’s patience for Brietta lasted exactly two minutes.
He started pounding on the door, irritated.
“You really want me to break in and teach you a lesson, huh? You’re just
a kid, yet you’re already scheming and lying to me?”
The more he spoke, the harder he banged.
Finally, the door flew open, revealing only darkness.
Brietta wasn’t there.
He spun around and grilled the nanny.

No matter how many times he asked, the nanny gave the same answer. “Ms. Swinton is in the morgue.”
That line made Ken snap. He cursed under his breath and fired her on the spot.
He told the nanny to pack and leave immediately.
She didn’t argue. She didn’t want to work for someone this stupid and cold–blooded anyway.
Ken wasted no time. He called his people and ordered them to start searching for Brietta.
When he found her, he was going to give her a proper lesson on behalf of his parents.
After hanging up, he sat down on the basement threshold.
Suddenly, a thought hit him
