Chapter 8Â
I wiped away my tears and made my way back to the Johnson residence to gather my belongings.Â
I figured that even if they didn’t allow me to take my few items of clothing and a blanket, I wouldn’t fight it. I only wanted to take my notebooks, containing Ms. Zimmerman’s invaluable mathematical problem–solving approaches, with me.Â
She had personally compiled seven entire notebooks of relevant information for me since she was aware of my passion for mathematics and my limited educational resources.Â
Those notebooks were what got me through those three years that felt like an absolute nightmare.Â

rushed inside to find the room littered with shredded papers. I didn’t bother checking my clothes or anything else. I began picking up the torn scraps from the floor shakily. Amid the scattered debris, I spotted part of a message Ms. Zimmerman had written for me. It read, “I hope your path ahead will be filled with light, Kiara…”Â
