Chapter 5
Everyone around me instantly fell into complete silence.
Henry’s face displayed sheer astonishment, along with other expressions I couldn’t interpret. Karen, still holding Tina, seemed both somewhat gratified and a little bewildered, while Liam was utterly dumbfounded. He was perplexed as to why I, whom he thought was striving to usurp Tina’s belongings, was now relinquishing my efforts. Tina, who had been crying moments before, brightened considerably.
Karen was the first to break the silence. “I was the one who gave birth to you! You think that one single declaration can erase our ties, huh? You’re truly a treacherous ingrate!”

with funding new buildings for Tina’s admission into high school.
Why did her gaze hold no hint of sorrow, only utter revulsion, when I tumbled down the stairs and was on the brink of death? Where was Karen when I was enduring abuse in the countryside, so starved that I resorted to eating dirt? Could she perhaps be in the city, providing Tina with an idyllic, pampered life?
I couldn’t help but let out a mirthless chuckle as my gaze swept over the people before me, a profound sense of disappointment settling deep within me.
Upon seeing my expression, Henry exploded in fury. “You ought to know that we merely treated Tina a little better to make up for your wrongs! Who exactly are you trying to impress with this act of yours, huh? You’ve spent so much of our money all these years. Are you planning to pretend you don’t know about this?”
Liam, on the other hand, sneered at me. “What’s going on now? Your pity play didn’t work last time, so now you’re trying to act indifferent, huh? You’re clearly still fixated on what belongs to Tina.”
I merely looked at them, feeling absolutely nothing. It turned out that complete disinterest brought such profound calmness. I ought to have disregarded them entirely sooner.
