Chapter 4
A heavy silence hung in the air, after Skylar’s words echoed.
Gerry cleared his throat and stepped closer to Skylar. He extended his hand to Anthony.
“My name is Gerry Caner, Gerry introduced himself. “1 am–”
“I know who you are.” Anthony interrupted calmly. He shook Gerry’s hand. “Anthony Rhein Bernard.”
Lilian gasped. She looked at Anthony. Bernard. Thu… Bernard? B–but, why you–”
Honey, I think we should get going,” Skylar said, cutting Lilian off. “We still have about two hours before the funeral. I want to freshen up first and the kids need a little rest too.”
Skylar moved closer to Anthony and whispered something. Anthony nodded. He turned to the twins and took both of their hands.
“Come on, boys, let’s wait in the car, Anthony said. He turned to Skylar and smiled softly. “Baby, I’ll wait for you in the car. Take your time.”
All eyes were on Anthony’s back and the win boys left the room, with looks of admiration, curiosity, or wonder.
They knew who Anthony Rhein Bernard was. He was the sole heir to the Bernard business empire, which was engaged in various business fields related to the automotive and electronics industries.

The man was a multi–millionaire and how could he and Skylar be together? When she left his house after the divorce, Skylar didn’t even bring anything.
“Skylar, are you really engaged to that man? How is that possible?”
Gerry asked, representing all the questions that were stored in everyone’s mind.
Skylar lifted her chin with a smirk. “And why can’t I be engaged to him?”
Gerry’s face turned red because of Skylar’s defiant attitude. He never cared about his daughter, who was born from his late wife, whom he never loved.
Even when Skylar divorced David and disappeared, he didn’t make much effort to look for her, other than just to avoid the anger of his father, who loved Skylar very much.
“Who are those kids, Skylar! Did you have kids with that guy when you guys were just engaged?” Lilian taunted sarcastically.

Skylar snorted sofily, feeling the irony in Gerry’s words, because she was sure that Gerry was the one who was most looking forward to his grandfather’s will being read.
“This is Mr. Aaron Carter’s order to us and we have been swom to carry out all his mandates as soon as he is buried,” said senior attorney Fredy Jenner. He turned to Skylar and smiled. “Calling you home, including one of his mandates. Ms. James.
Skylar nodded.
Two days ago, she received an email from her grandfather’s legal team represented by Fredy Jenner, informing her grandfather’s critical condition and asking her to return.
Seven hours after receiving the first email, she received a second email informing her that her grandfather had passed away and according grandfather’s wishes, the funeral would only be held after Skylar returned.
“James!” Gerry asked in a high tone. He turned to Skylar. “Did you change your name, Skylar!”

“Yes.” Skylar answered calmly. The first thing I did after leaving here was to change my name. There is no more Carter, let alone Lawrence for me”
Lilian snorted harshly. “You really don’t know yourself, Skylar. You can not use the name Lawrence after divorcing David, but Carter! Weren’t you bom 2 Camer?
“I was born, raised and loved by a James. After she died, the only Carter who loved me was my grandfather, but he was far from me. The only Carter who was close, hated me very much and preferred his other daughter. Why should I bother using his name, especially after I decided to throw away my unpleasant past?” Skylar answered lightly but firmly
Lilian gasped at Skylar’s answer and opened her mouth to argue, but Fredy Jenner quickly tapped the small hammer on his side on the table.
“Wait a minute, Mr.Jenner, David interrupted. “If you were the one who called Skylar back and it was at grandfather’s wish, does that mean, all this time grandfather Aaron already knew where Skylar was?”
“Yes, Fredy Jenner answered. “Mr. Aaron
known about Ms James’s whereabouts since three years after she left.”
That was information that Skylar had just learned, because when she received the email pm Fredy Jenner, she couldn’t ask how the man knew her new email address.
However, her grandfather was an Aaron Carter. He could do anything with the resources and money he had. Skylar decided to ask Fredy Jenner after this was over.

Skylar watched with disgust, how Gerry, Lilian, even Jenna and David, their eyes shining with hope. She touched Anthony’s hand.

Anthony smiled and stroked Skylar’s arm, “Just be patient for a line while longer. If your grandfather could restrain himself from bothering you when he knew where you were living all this time, then he would expect you to restrain yourself from those people now,”
Across the table, David watched Skylar and Anthony’s interaction with annoyance.
“Ms.James, I was asked by Mr. Aaron Carter to hand over all these documents to you” Fredy Jenner said. “And to accompany you until you finally distribute all the assets under Mr. Aaron Carter’s name to everyone he designated in the documents.”
The senior lawyer’s words shocked everyone in the room, including Skylar herself.
“Whor” Gerry asked. “Wh–why Skylar–”

“When I open the envelope containing this document in front of you all, since then, Mr. Aaron Carter’s power has been officially transferred to Ms. James, who is legally stated in the eyes of the law, as the main heir who will manage Carter Mainland Enterprise. Fredy Jenner said firmly. “This decision is legally valid, written and signed by Mr. Aaron Carter himself in front of three supreme court justices and a team of eight lawyers”
