Evelyn’s Story 1
The Wolfe Family’s ancestral decree: the heir shall not marry a commoner.
But Sebastian Wolfe, the Capitol Circle’s golden boy, fell head over heels for Evelyn Grant, a humble fishmonger!
To be with her, he relinquished his inheritance, endured ninety–nine lashes of the family law, and knelt in the Family Chapel for three days and nights, his shirt soaked in blood. Yet, he still smiled at her, saying, “Evie, don’t be afraid. I only want you.”
Eventually, the Wolfe Family relented, agreeing to let him run away with her, but only after he provided an heir.
From then on, the most frequent words Sebastian spoke to Evelyn were-“Wait.”
First, he told her to wait while he got another woman pregnant.

Eleanor Wolfe’s satisfied laughter echoed from the other end:“Should’ve been this sensible sooner! A single stint in the freezer taught you a lesson. A fishmonger? Worthy of the Wolfe Family?”
“We’ll arrange everything in two weeks,”

Sebastian almost reflexively handed the baby to a maid: Take her upstairs.”
His wary gaze was like knives piercing Evelyn’s heart.
He was afraid she’d hurt his child.

The man who once said, “I only acknowledge children born from your womb,” now guarded against her like she was a murderer.
Only after the baby was taken away did Sebastian approach, reaching out to check her body:“You’re back. The cold storage… were you hurt?”
Evelyn looked at the man who once took ninety–nine lashes for her, her heart aching. She turned her head, avoiding his touch.
He frowned, explaining, “Evie, in that situation last night, the more I protected you, the harsher the punishment.”
“And we’re leaving soon. I don’t want any complications. Besides, the child is innocent. Why…”
I told you, it wasn’t me!” Evelyn’s eyes welled up.
Sebastian seemed startled by her intense reaction, pausing before softening his tone:“Okay, okay, it doesn’t matter anymore.”
It doesn’t matter anymore.
Those four words felt like ice picks to her heart.
He still didn’t believe her.
As the tension mounted, Charlotte, stroking her belly, came over, feigning sincerity:“Miss Grant, I apologize too. I was too frantic. You don’t have children; you may not understand a mother’s feelings…”
She adjusted her hair; the jade bracelet on her wrist gleamed under the lights.
Evelyn’s pupils constricted. She grabbed her wrist:“Where did you get that bracelet?”
“Charlotte liked it, so I gave it to her.” Sebastian pulled Evelyn’s hand away.“Consider it your apology.”
That’s my
mother’s heirloom!” Evelyn’s voice trembled. “How could you give it away? You know how important it is to me!”
She reached for the bracelet, but Charlotte suddenly stumbled backward, clutching her belly and groaning.
“Ah… my stomach…”
“Evelyn Grant!” Sebastian immediately shoved her away, his eyes chillingly cold.“She’s carrying my child! Are you finished causing trouble?!”
He pushed too hard; Evelyn slammed into the coffee table, her head hitting the corner. Blood gushed instantly.
But Sebastian didn’t look back. He scooped up Charlotte and rushed out.
“Sebastian…” Charlotte clung to him, weakly crying, “Will the baby be okay…”
“Don’t worry, I’m here,” his voice was agonizingly tender. “You’ll be fine, and the baby will be fine.”
