Jennifer’s face went pale. “Okay, I’m coming out.”
The area outside the ICU downstairs was packed. Several doctors were talking to the patient’s family, but a big guy with a beer belly shoved them aside impatiently.
He said, “Get the doctor who operated on my wife out here. I want her here right now!”
Jennifer came over, saying seriously, “What do you want?”
Those doctors quickly stepped aside. “Dr. Nelson, you’re finally here.”
The man named Blake Adams immediately locked his eyes on Jennifer, his face twisted with anger. “You’re the one who put my wife in a corna, aren’t you?”
Facing this furious man, Jennifer suddenly thought of her father, Philip. When she was a child, he would look at her the same way right before he hit her. She clenched her trembling fingers, but they still shook badly. Forcing herself to stay calm, she said, “Brynn was already in critical condition when she got here. She lost a lot of blood, but it wasn’t my fault.”
Before she could finish, Blake grabbed her by the collar.
“Not your fault? What kind of crap is that? My wife is bleeding out because of you, and now she’s dying. Do you even deserve to call yourself a doctor? People like you shouldn’t be in this profession!” he roared.
After saying that, he spat right in Jennifer’s face.
He continued, “If anything happens to my wife, I swear I’ll kill you. Money won’t fix this.”
“I promise, your wife will wake up, but I’m telling you again, it’s not my fault.” Jennifer struggled to break free from Blake’s grip, and with a few male doctors stepping in to break things up, she managed to get away.
She went to the restroom and splashed some water on her face. Tears streamed down her cheek, but she quickly wiped them away.
Out in the hallway, two young nurses stood with their backs to her, whispering to each other.
“Dr. Nelson’s mistake today was huge, and the whole department is talking about it. Looks like she won’t be getting that department head position at the end of the year.”
“Didn’t you see it? Mr. Foster stormed out of Dr. Nelson’s office, absolutely furious. She should be glad if she doesn’t get demoted.”
Jennifer walked past the two nurses with a blank face. When they saw her, they both coughed awkwardly, stopped gossiping, and hurried off to work.
Jennifer returned to her office. It was dead silent–the kind of silence where she could almost hear her own breathing, contrasted with the chaotic footsteps and arguments echoing from outside.
There were some medical records and two pots of plants on her desk.
Suddenly, she swept everything off the desk onto the floor. She lowered her head, shoulders shaking uncontrollably as she broke down in silent sobs.
Just then, something came to her. She grabbed her phone from the couch and called Cheryl. Then she yelled, “This is all your fault! Why didn’t you text me back or pick up my calls? I almost thought you were dead.”
Cheryl was completely baffled, so she shouted, “Are you nuts? I’m perfectly fine. Why do you keep talking nonsense? Seriously, what’s wrong with you?” “You might as well have just died of heat stroke!” Jennifer snapped, all her anger pouring out at Cheryl at that moment.

“Hold on, what did you say? Why did you curse me? Hello?” Alone in a strange city, Cheryl hugged Serena tightly with tears streaming couldn’t believe what she just heard.
She just couldn’t figure out what Donald liked about Jennifer, a woman with an unpredictable temper. Still sobbing, Cheryl called Donald, who wa away on a work trip and hadn’t come back yet.
